Building product variants

Overview

The variant editor helps you build and maintain product variants — combinations of options like Size and Color — quickly, even for products with many variants.

Adding Options and Values

  1. Open a product and go to the Options section
  2. Add an option (for example, Size) and its values (for example, Small, Medium, Large)
  3. Cartly generates a variant for every combination of your option values automatically

Reordering Options and Values

Drag an option's handle to change the order options appear in on the product page, or drag a value chip within an option to reorder its values — useful for putting sizes in the order shoppers expect (Small before Large) rather than the order they were typed.

Renaming a Value in Place

Double-click a value chip (or press Enter while it's focused) to rename it. Renaming updates every variant that uses that value while keeping each variant's id, price, SKU, and inventory intact — nothing is recreated or reset.

Bulk-Editing Price and SKU

When a product has more than one variant, an Apply to all row appears above the variant list:

  • Set price on all — enter a price and click Apply to set it on every variant at once
  • SKU prefix — enter a prefix and click Apply to prepend it to every variant's SKU, while keeping each SKU unique

Per-Variant Images

Each variant has its own image column, so a shopper who picks a specific color sees that color's photo rather than the product's default image.

ASCII-Only SKUs

Turn on ASCII-only SKU (scanner-safe) before generating variants to keep autogenerated SKUs limited to plain letters, numbers, and hyphens — useful if you print barcodes or use handheld scanners that don't handle accented characters or symbols well.
