Checking your theme for errors
What Check Theme Does
Check theme in the code editor reads your saved theme files and lists problems before your shoppers run into them. Every change made by Cartly Command has to pass the same check.
Running a Check
- Open the theme in the code editor.
- Save the files you are working on. The check reads saved files only.
- Click Check theme in the toolbar. A check can take up to about 45 seconds.
The result shows the number of errors and warnings. Click an issue to open its file at the line; issues about the theme as a whole are listed under Whole theme. The check never blocks saving, so you decide what to fix and when.
One check runs at a time in a store. If you click again right after a check, wait a few seconds and try again.
What It Looks For
- Liquid and JSON: templates that do not parse, invalid JSON, broken section schemas, templates that use sections that do not exist, and missing snippets.
- Rendering: the theme's pages are rendered with your store's real data, and sections that fail or come out empty are reported.
- Translations: text keys that are missing from the theme's default (English) language file.
- Safety: text placed in links and attributes without escaping, unsafe links, inline event handlers and scripts the storefront's security policy blocks, and files loaded from sites the storefront does not allow.
- Content: placeholder or invented reviews, testimonials and similar claims in the theme's default texts.
- Housekeeping: settings that change nothing on the page, and images without alt text.
Errors and Warnings
An error breaks your storefront or is blocked by it, so fix it. A warning is advice: it may be fine for your theme, but it is worth a look.
