Rewarding Customers with Loyalty Points
What Loyalty Points Does
Loyalty Points is a free, built-in app that rewards repeat customers. Signed-in shoppers earn points every time they pay for an order and can redeem those points for a discount code on their next purchase. There is no third-party service to connect and no extra cost — you install it from the App Store and turn it on.
Points are only earned by customers who are signed in to an account. Guests who check out without an account do not earn points.
Turning It On
- Open the App Store from your admin and install Loyalty Points (it's free).
- Go to Apps → Loyalty Points to open the settings.
- Set your rates (below), make sure the program is enabled, and save.
How Earning Works
When a customer pays for an order, they automatically earn points based on the order's item subtotal — the value of the products after any discounts, not counting shipping or tax. The number of points is your earn rate multiplied by each whole dollar of that subtotal (rounded down).
If an order is later refunded or cancelled, the points earned on it are removed proportionally — a full refund removes all of them, a partial refund removes a matching share. This happens on its own; you don't need to adjust anything by hand.
How Redeeming Works
From their account page, a customer converts points into a one-time discount code. The code is personal — it only works for the customer who created it and can't be forwarded to someone else — and it expires after the number of days you set. Customers can redeem once they reach your minimum, in whole-dollar amounts.
Setting Your Rates
You control four numbers under Apps → Loyalty Points:
- Points earned per $1 — how many points a customer earns for each dollar of subtotal.
- Points needed for $1 off — how many points equal one dollar of discount when redeeming.
- Minimum points to redeem — the smallest balance a customer can cash in.
- Code expiry (days) — how long a redeemed discount code stays valid.
Because the earn rate and the redeem rate are set separately, you decide the effective reward. For example, earning 10 points per $1 while charging 100 points per $1 off is the same as giving 10% back.
Showing the Balance on Your Storefront
Add the Loyalty Points widget to your customer account page from the theme editor so shoppers always see their current balance and a redeem button. The widget only appears for signed-in customers.
Adjusting a Customer's Points by Hand
On the Apps → Loyalty Points page you can add or remove points for an individual customer — useful for support, a goodwill gesture, or correcting a mistake. Enter the customer's email, the number of points to add or subtract, and a short note. Every manual adjustment is recorded in your audit log.
